10 Things I want my Clients to Know | Traverse City Family Photography

When in life have you felt most vulnerable? For me, I have felt most vulnerable when I started sharing my photos and claiming the title “photographer” as my job status.  My photos are part of me, even when they are of other people or places, they show what I value through my point of view.  What if someone disagrees with me? Or doesn’t think they are good or worthy?

Another time when I have felt vulnerable is when I am being photographed.  As a professional photographer I have had the opportunity to meet and be photographed by some other wonderful photographers.  As much as I love the outcome, the process is quite scary.  I realized each and every time I photograph someone, I am asking them to be vulnerable and open up to me in front of the camera, to capture them in the moment in a way that can be preserved.  This can be scary!

I want to share with you the top 10 things I want my clients to know before their photo session that may help put you at ease.

  1. Stop apologizing, especially about your child. Documentary or posed, no matter what type of session, there is a vibe in the air and your kids are feeling it. They will goof off and its ok!

  2. Share your ideas. I have a million dancing around in my head but I want your photos to reflect you.

  3. Plan ahead the day of your session. Give yourself extra time especially if we are not photographing in your home.

  4. You don’t need to lose weight or look more put together. You are already enough.

  5. Your home doesn’t need to be picked up or look magazine-worthy. I promise you will love those details, those evidences that you were doing life there, in the years to come.

  6. You don’t need to match, just wear something you feel good in.

  7. These photos are for you, yes, but they are also for your children and grandchildren. Wouldn’t you love to see everyday life photos of your grandparents? Great grandparents?

  8. Plan to print your photographs. Large or small, it doesn’t matter, but get those photos on the wall, or the bookshelf, or in an album on your table.

  9. Don’t be afraid to get in the frame. You don’t even have to look at the camera, just love on the person you’re in the moment with.

  10. You will be surprised how much your love your photos. I’m not saying this to toot my own horn, but because most first-time clients can’t imagine what pleasure it brings to hold a moment that has already passed right there in your hands to look at over and over again.

I get it, it is hard to let some of those things go.  Our pre-session consultation will help you lay some of those worries aside. Are there other worries or questions you have? Let me know.
